Turkish Giali Tzamisi (or Tzami) dominates in the Venetian harbor of Chania and it is very difficult to miss the pane from your sight. It is an impressive size square building, with big cupola that has been supported by four arcs. On to building you will observe six small domes, although from the pane is absent the minaret that was demolished in the beginning of 20th century.
Name “Giali Tzami” it emanates from the Turkish “Giali Tzamisi”, which means “the pane of the seashore”.
The pane functioned as Moslem temple up to 1923. It is the first pane that was built in Crete immediately after the city conquers from the Turkeys in 1649. According to recent studies of Archaeological Service, the pane was built on a small temple that existed in the same place before the new building. Architectural it has intense Arabic characteristics. For a period it was accommodated the Museum Chania while today it entertains various reports and exhibitions of art and culture.
