Therisso

Situated 16 kilometers far from Chania, at the south, Therisso is a small village with 110 permanent residents. This mountainous village, built at the foothill of the White Mountains is famous for its struggles against Ottoman domination. Eleftherios Venizelos started in Therisso, the revolt of 1905 that led to the incorporation of Crete to Greece.

Therissos is worth visiting for the magnificent landscape. The road from Chania passes through an impressive gorge, by the river so driving here can be a fascinating experience. If you like caves don’t miss to visit the cave Sarakina, only two kilometers north of the village. Traces of Neolithic, Minoan and Geometric period have been found there.

A local feast takes place on the 15th of August, in honor of the Assumption of Virgin Mary.

A few rooms are available for accommodation if you decide to spend the night at the village. You will also find taverns with excellent local food and drinks and some small cafes.

Therisso has access by public bus all year.
