Situated 45 kilometers far from Chania, at the southeast, Kournas is a village with 500 permanent residents. The village has been built amphitheatrically, on the eastern foothill of the White Mountains and it has a marvelous view to the homonymous lake, the bigger natural lake on the island.
The lake worth a visit for the unique flora and fauna it has and for the marvelous landscape. Swimming in the lake is allowed, and small boats can take you for a tour. A few taverns with delicious dishes including fish from the lake are available.
Accommodation facilities are not available at the village. Except from the taverns at the lake, there are a few cafes to visit and some restaurants, most of them with excellent local cuisine and fascinating view, very suitable for eating especially in the winter time.
Access is possible by public bus from Chania, once a day except the weekends early in the morning. We would advise to check the bus timetables in advance. Private and rented car and motorbikes is the best way to visit the place.
