Tavronitis is located 18kilometers away from the city of Chania. The village is well known for its bridge and the river which dries up in summer time.
At this place, the German invasion of Crete began in the morning of 20 May 1941.
After a huge bombardment, numerous flocks of transport aircraft began to make parachute drops at Maleme village until Chania area.
Cretan people, no matter of age, men, women and children, gave a fierce and strong struggle. During the undertaking, the Germans failed to establish a small bridgehead east of the river Tavronitis and take control of the Maleme airport and the know 107 hill, in which the area of the whole airport was controlled.
It was a big victory!
